Web Design Guide

The appearance of all the text and links in this website are controlled by the stylesheet.

Body Text - Arial/Helvetica/sans-serif, 0.8 em

This is what the body text looks like. The size is specified in ems -- a variable size specification that enables users to change the text size if they wish.

Headings

Headings are the same font as the body.

  • Heading One, 1.3 em

  • Heading Two, 1.2 em

  • Heading Three, 1.1 em

  • Heading Four, 1.0 em

  • Heading Five, 1.0 em

Colors

  • Dark brown: #3d2d20
  • Medium brown: #a58852
  • Light brown: #d4bc91
  • Cream color: #f1e0b8
  • Red: #921f02

Link Styles

  • The default unvisited link is dark red, underlined. Visited links are dark brown.

  • The appearance of the left navigation links is determined by a style class called "leftnav. The style class is applied in the <a> tag.

  • The appearance of the top navigation links is determined by the style "topnav." Each link is in a table cell, and the style is applied in the <td> tag.

Header, Footer and Navigation "Library" files

The site navigation and footer information are in Dreamweaver "Library" files. To change those links, edit the Library files. Everything about the Library files is the same as what you see on the website -- except for the type faces and spacing. Library files do not show the styles in the css stylesheet and appear as plain html. When you save changes to a Library file, you will be asked to update all files that contain that Library. You should do this, then upload all the updated files, including the LIbrary files, to your web server.

  • "header.lbi" contains the school name, the Cincinnati Public Schools logo, the "Contact Us" and "Enroll" links and the top navigation.

The CPS logo is linked to the CPS website. The "Contact Us" and "Enroll" links will need to be linked when you create those pages, and the Mt. Airy school name could also be linked to the home page, once the address of that page is known.

  • "footer.lbi" contains the school name and address, a link back to the CPS home page.

About the Source Files (PhotoShop files)

  • mt-airy-web-home.psd
was used to create the header and top navigation, the home page photo with corner accents, the background images for the header and the top navigation, and the tagline on the home page. (Portions of the Photoshop files with active slices are part of the site.

  • mt-airy-web-inside.psd
was used only to create the image on the second level page. All other page elements are derived from mt-airy-web-home.psd.

  • mt-airy-bullet.psd
is the red square bullet. (The stylesheet is written to use this image as the bullet instead of the black dot that is the default bullet in html.)

  • mt-airy-background.psd
is the gradated page background image.
